OXY ARTS and the Media Arts & Culture (MAC) Department welcome you to attend a book launch celebration and conversation with MAC Professor Katarzyna Marciniak, whose latest monograph, Refugee Cinema, co-authored with Dr. Bruce Bennett, was recently published by Oxford University Press.
Dr. Marciniak is a longstanding leader in establishing transnational media studies as a vital subfield. Refugee Cinema charts new territory by establishing and elevating refugee cinema as a distinct area of study and cultural urgency. Taking a global perspective, the book examines a wide range of media forms, spanning feature films, documentaries, journalism, and hybrid fine-art installations/interventions.
Dr. Marciniak will briefly discuss the origins of the project and read representative passages from the book, followed by a Q&A moderated by fellow MAC Professor Broderick Fox. Light refreshments will be served.
MAC Cinematheque is an ongoing event series of film screenings and discussions moderated by the department's faculty, designed to bring together the College and Los Angeles communities around timely topics, representational issues, and media forms.
